The North West Public Health Observatory’s key objectives follow those outlined in the Government's White Paper "Our Healthier Nation". The main objectives of the Observatory are :

Monitoring health and disease trends and highlighting areas for action
Identifying gaps in health information
Advising on methods for health and health inequality assessments
Drawing together information from different sources in new ways to improve health
Carrying out projects to highlight particular health issues
Evaluating progress by local agencies in improving health and cutting inequality
Looking ahead to give warning of future public health problems

The overriding aim of the Observatory is to improve health in the North West by enhancing access to public health information and intelligence. Our prime functions in achieving this aim are to:

Drive the development of this NWPHO Web Site
Direct and collate a stock take of Regional Public Health information sources
Produce and / or obtain an extensive range of information and research reports and make them available via the internet
Coordinate the distribution of a series of Public Health Information Reports and regular Health Bulletins
Deliver web located interactive databases of Public Health information and Public Health Capacity in the North West
Share information technology and web development expertise
Collaborate with Regional agencies in developing electronic information delivery
Organise an annual conference and produce an annual report
